Year 5

Year 5 at Lavendon School

Year 5 is an important stage in Key Stage 2, where children begin to look ahead to their final year of primary school and the transition to secondary education. This year focuses on consolidating prior learning, introducing more complex concepts, and giving pupils the confidence and skills they need to be successful as they approach the end of their primary journey.

Morning Learning
Mornings continue to prioritise English and Mathematics, with a strong emphasis on applying knowledge in increasingly sophisticated ways. In English, children develop their ability to write with precision and flair, exploring a range of genres and refining grammar and punctuation. In Mathematics, pupils tackle more advanced problem-solving and reasoning tasks, building fluency and confidence in preparation for Year 6.

Afternoon Curriculum (Our Learning Expeditions)
Afternoons offer a broad and balanced curriculum that encourages curiosity and creativity. Subjects include science, computing, geography, history, design technology, art, and music. Lessons are designed to deepen understanding and challenge pupils to think critically, make connections across subjects, and apply their learning in real-world contexts. Collaborative projects and independent research tasks help children develop resilience and independence.

Technology and Digital Learning
Technology continues to enhance learning in Year 5. Pupils use iPads and other digital tools to research, present ideas, and collaborate on projects. These experiences help them develop essential digital skills and prepare for the demands of modern learning environments.

Personal Development
Weekly PSHE and RE lessons remain central to supporting pupils’ personal growth. Children explore themes such as responsibility, respect, and diversity, while developing the confidence to express opinions and engage in thoughtful discussion. These lessons help prepare pupils for the social and emotional challenges of their final year and beyond.

Looking Ahead
Year 5 at Lavendon School is about progression and preparation—giving children everything they need to succeed before joining their final year of primary school. It is a year of challenge, opportunity, and growth, ensuring pupils are ready to embrace the responsibilities and expectations of Year 6 with confidence.
