Year 4

Year 4 at Lavendon School

Year 4 is a key stage in a child’s journey through Key Stage 2, where learning becomes more challenging and children are encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively, and develop greater independence. Building on the foundations of Year 3, pupils begin to tackle more complex concepts and apply their knowledge across a wider range of subjects.

Morning Learning
Mornings continue to focus on English and Mathematics, with an emphasis on developing fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, explore different strategies, and apply their learning in varied contexts. Writing tasks become more sophisticated, with a focus on structure, grammar, and creativity.

Afternoon Curriculum (Our Learning Expedition)
Afternoons offer a rich and varied curriculum, including science, computing, and foundation subjects such as geography, history, design technology, art, music, and physical education. Lessons are designed to deepen understanding and encourage children to make connections between topics. Investigations, research projects, and collaborative tasks help foster curiosity and resilience.

Technology and Digital Learning
Technology continues to support learning in Year 4, with children using iPads and other digital tools for research, presentations, and creative projects. These tools help pupils develop digital literacy and prepare them for the increasingly technological world.

Personal Development
Weekly PSHE and RE lessons remain an important part of the curriculum, providing opportunities for reflection, discussion, and understanding of different viewpoints. Children are encouraged to develop empathy, respect, and responsibility as part of their personal growth.

Multiplication Check
In Year 4, children prepare for and complete the Statutory Multiplication Tables Check, which assesses their fluency in times tables up to 12 × 12. This is an important milestone that supports mathematical confidence and underpins future learning in Key Stage 2.

Looking Ahead
Year 4 at Lavendon School is about consolidating skills, embracing new challenges, and developing independence as learners. It is a year of growth, exploration, and preparation for the upper stages of Key Stage 2.
