Year 3

Year 3 at Lavendon School

Year 3 marks an exciting transition as children move into Key Stage 2, building on the strong foundations laid in Key Stage 1. This stage is all about developing greater independence, deepening subject knowledge, and fostering the skills needed for more complex learning. Children begin to take increased responsibility for their learning while continuing to explore and apply ideas with creativity and confidence.

Morning Learning
Mornings in Year 3 remain focused on the core subjects of English and Mathematics, but with a greater emphasis on reasoning, problem-solving, and applying skills across different contexts. Whole-class teaching is complemented by guided group work and independent tasks, encouraging children to think critically and work with growing autonomy.

Afternoon Curriculum (Our Learning Expeditions)
Afternoons provide opportunities for a broad and balanced curriculum, including science, computing, and foundation subjects such as geography, history, design technology, art, music, and physical education. Lessons are designed to challenge children to make connections between subjects and apply their learning in meaningful ways. Open-ended projects and investigations help nurture curiosity and resilience.

Technology and Digital Learning
Technology continues to play a key role in Year 3. Children use iPads to research, collaborate, and present their work, supporting both independent learning and teamwork. These tools also help children reflect on their progress and develop essential digital literacy skills.

Personal Development
Weekly PSHE and RE lessons provide space for personal growth, ethical discussions, and understanding diverse perspectives. Children are encouraged to express opinions, listen respectfully, and develop empathy as part of their journey toward becoming responsible citizens.

Physical Education
Physical education remains central to the curriculum, with regular indoor and outdoor sessions promoting fitness, coordination, and teamwork. Children also begin to experience more structured sports and activities, helping them build confidence and a lifelong love of movement.

Looking Ahead
Year 3 at Lavendon School is about embracing the challenges of Key Stage 2, developing independence, and building the skills and knowledge that will prepare children for the next stages of their learning journey. It is a year of growth, exploration, and achievement in a supportive and stimulating environment.
